This DIY How-To video shows how to change a typical BMW “under car” fuel filter as used on most BMWs up through the mid-2000s. There are various under car filter mounting locations, this video specifically shows the E46 3-series 99-05, but can be used as a general guide for all under car filter applications.

Most BMWs up until the latest models have the fuel filters mounted under the vehicle. Many of the latest BMW and MINI models have the fuel filter mounted inside the fuel tank. In this DIY we will be looking at the under-car filter replacement. When preparing to change the fuel filter, most models will require that you lift one end or one side of the vehicle for access.

As a side note, since we do not have to remove any wheels or suspension components, it is often more convenient to run the front or rear of the vehicle up onto ramps. Once we have the vehicle properly, and safely, raised up off the ground we can start the filter replacement procedure. Below, are the general steps that will apply to all under-car fuel filter replacements.
